Kugelspiel is an improvised work in which the events which take place within the piece are dependent not only upon the players’ response to some obtuse graphical and textual stimuli but also to the actions of the ‘composer’ and even the audience during the performance of the piece. The ideas explored during this experience are ones that a child might encounter through wordless play: learning through exploration and experimentation, responding to others either through imitation or contradiction and expression of personality through actions. In fact the obtuseness of this programme note is further allusion to the desire to communicate and understand one another wordlessly. The piece is of an indeterminate duration but its general structure is guided by the composer who is, in turn, responding to events around him.
